Paying for Doula Services with Your HSA or FSA Card

You can now use a wider range of HSA and FSA cards to pay for doula services through Doulado. Recent updates have made it easier for many cards to be accepted, especially those that require more specific merchant information.


How to Pay with Your HSA or FSA Card

When paying an invoice or adding your card as a payment method, you may see an option indicating that your card has restricted use (such as an HSA or FSA card).

If you’re using an HSA or FSA card, we recommend selecting this option. This links your card directly to your doula’s payment system with the correct healthcare-related merchant details, which helps improve the chances of your payment being approved.

Once the payment method is saved successfully, you can proceed with making an invoice payment with your card!

What If I Don’t Select That Option?

Some HSA and FSA cards have fewer restrictions and may still work without selecting the restricted-use option.

However, if your payment is declined, try again and make sure to select that option. This often resolves issues related to how the card is recognized.


Why This Step Matters

HSA and FSA cards sometimes require very specific merchant information to approve a transaction. Even with these improvements, your card provider ultimately determines whether a payment is eligible.  This means that in some cases, a payment may still be declined based on your plan’s rules or coverage.


If Your Payment Is Declined

If you’re having trouble using your HSA or FSA card, here are a few steps you can take:

  • Double check that you selected the restricted-use option when entering your card
  • Contact your HSA or FSA provider to confirm whether doula services are covered under your plan
  • Ask your provider if there are any restrictions on how your card can be used

Alternative Option: Reimbursement

If your card cannot be used to pay directly through Doulado, but your plan does cover doula services, you can typically:

  • Pay the invoice using another payment method
  • Submit your receipt or invoice to your HSA or FSA provider for reimbursement

If you use your HSA or FSA card with multiple doulas, you may need to add and link the card separately for each one. This is normal and helps ensure the correct information is used for each business.

This process is designed to make using your HSA or FSA funds as smooth as possible, while still working within the requirements set by your card provider.
